Freelance Whales – Weathervanes

“Weathervanes” is Freelance Whales debut LP which has made a big splash. I have heard them playing on the radio at the gym, on Starbucks commercials and they were even the background for groovesharks main page. I first heard them when reviewing "Weathervanes" for WUAG. At the time I compared them to hello goodbye and called them a bit overly cute sounding. Which on some of the tracks I still stand by. However I really appreciate the wide variety of instruments the group uses. Seeing videos of them playing live you can see they really enjoy what they are playing which I'm sure makes there live shows a lot of fun.

The band formed in 2008 and released “Weathervanes” in 2010.They describe themselves as experimental pop. They are from Queens New York and are signed to FrenchKiss and Mom and Pop records. They will be playing at Coachella this 16^th and at Bonnaroo in June. (wish I was going :/ to both/either of these)

Young the Giant "S/T"

Young the Giant formed in Irvine California in 2004 while still in high school. Graduation came and so did college. Hope was not lost of the band though, after a few years they put school on hold and focused on their music. In 2009 they were opening for Kings of Leon and playing at South by South West. In August of 2009 they signed to Road Runner Records. In 2010 they toured with Minus the Bear and Steel Train. October 25th 2010 this album was released.

I first heard the album on my radio show which I DJ for my schools College radio station. Someone actually called in and requested the track My Body. At first I was not overly impressed. After a listen or two the album is really growing on me. I really enjoy the album as a whole. It is one of those albums I could play on repeat and not notice when it repeated. Not because it is simple background noise but that the tracks each seem fresh and new each time I hear them.

Overall a great debut album for the band. It will be interesting to see what comes next out of this group. Oh and they are all between the ages of 20 and 22...Which is awesome but it also makes me feel rather unsuccessful at this point in my life.
